Before the opening after shaking hands, players either remove a piece from the board or discard the Meta available to them.
Each player may choose whether or not to introduce a Meta during the initial piece placement (maximum one per side), replacing any starting piece except the King (Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook, or Queen).
If a Meta ownes a base, it must always be aligned with the squares of the board.
